Japan’s National Institute pioneered Paro, the therapeutic robot seal, in the early 1990s. Over 30 years later, Japan remains at the forefront of “age tech,” driven by an aging population and a technological embrace. This demographic shift has led to innovative solutions, such as robotic pets, to supplement care and alleviate loneliness among older adults. The United States, also experiencing an aging population, has been slower to adopt such technologies. However, New York State’s Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) has distributed over 31,500 robotic pets since 2018. Inspired by an Amazon purchase, NYSOFA’s Acting Director Greg Olsen initiated the program, which features robotic dogs, cats, and birds from Ageless Innovations’ Joy for All brand. These robots provide companionship and emotional support, especially vital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research supports the benefits of robotic pets in reducing loneliness and depression, although human interaction remains essential. NYSOFA’s program is part of a broader initiative involving 21 tech partnerships aimed at enhancing the lives of older adults through technology.
