In a bold move, Scottish artist Michael Forbes has painted over some of his most prized works in protest against the negative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the art world. Forbes, known for his Pop art style and celebrity fans, claims that AI is saturating the internet with images, and worse, harvesting artists’ work without acknowledgement to create new pictures. By covering parts of four paintings in black paint, Forbes is making a statement about the loss of creativity and control that artists face in the digital age. He believes that AI-generated images are forcing artists to compete unfairly, leading some to abandon their careers altogether. Forbes’ protest may be a small gesture, but it highlights a critical issue that threatens the very fabric of the art world. His decision to only share parts of his paintings on social media and showcase full pieces in-person at exhibitions is a deliberate attempt to reclaim control over his art.
