A United Nations report reveals China is the global leader in filing patents for generative artificial intelligence (AI) inventions, surpassing the United States by a large margin. Generative AI encompasses technologies that create new content, such as chatbots, images, videos, and sounds. Over the past decade, there have been over 50,000 patent applications for generative AI, with China filing more than 38,000 of these, six times the number filed by the US. Major Chinese companies like ByteDance and Alibaba Group are among the top applicants, with US-based OpenAI also making significant contributions. South Korea, Japan, India, and the UK follow in the rankings. The report highlights that the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 democratized access to advanced generative AI tools. OpenAI’s relatively recent patent activity may be due to its transition from a non-profit to a “capped” for-profit model or its strategy of maintaining intellectual property as trade secrets. Generative AI patents cover a wide range of sectors, including life sciences, and have the potential to revolutionize fields like drug development.
