Figma, a leading UI design platform, has been forced to disable its new AI-powered design tool, Make Design, after it was discovered to replicate existing app designs, including Apple’s weather app for iOS. The tool, intended to create quick UI mockups, raised concerns over intellectual property theft and legal issues for users. Figma’s CEO, Dylan Field, took responsibility for pushing the tool out too quickly and promised to re-enable it once a full QA pass is completed. However, the incident highlights the risks of rushing out AI tools without proper checks and raises questions about the training and potential biases of these tools. Furthermore, it sparks concerns over the potential for creative convergence, where products may start to look increasingly similar due to AI-driven design.
