The United Nations General Assembly has passed a Chinese-sponsored resolution, supported by the United States, urging developed nations to bridge the gap with developing countries in the use and benefits of artificial intelligence (AI). This follows a March resolution led by the US with global backing to ensure AI is secure and trustworthy. The adoption of these non-binding resolutions highlights the US and China’s commitment to shaping AI’s future and their cooperation on this issue. China’s UN Ambassador Fu Cong emphasized the resolutions’ complementary nature, with the US version being broad and the Chinese one focusing on capacity building. Despite this collaboration, Fu criticized the US Treasury’s proposed rule to restrict US investments in China’s AI sector. The resolution calls for a fair, open, and inclusive AI business environment and highlights the importance of managing AI’s military applications. It also aims to bridge the AI divide and promote international cooperation.
