Comtech has introduced SmartAssist, an AI-powered solution designed to handle low-priority non-emergency calls without human intervention. This innovative technology aims to address the critical challenges faced by Emergency Communications Centers and Public Safety Answering Points, particularly staffing shortages and high call volumes.

SmartAssist utilizes AI chatbots programmed with conversational design to understand and respond to callers’ natural language. The system can effectively triage and resolve non-emergency requests, allowing human telecommunicators to focus on critical emergency calls. Key features of SmartAssist include:

  • AI-backed voice and chatbot capabilities
  • Customizable response solutions for various low-priority inquiries
  • Text message handling and form creation
  • Foreign language support
  • Performance metrics tracking

Comtech is currently conducting pilot programs with multiple agencies and Next Generation 911 customers across the United States. These trials aim to integrate SmartAssist into existing Public Safety Answering Points connected to Comtech’s NG911 networks. The goal is to enhance non-emergency response rates, prioritize mission-critical calls, improve situational awareness, and alleviate staffing shortages.

SmartAssist represents the first offering in Comtech’s SmartNG portfolio, which aims to combine Next Generation 911 and AI solutions to optimize emergency communication workflows. This innovative approach has the potential to revolutionize public safety operations by significantly enhancing call processing, reducing response times, and addressing staffing challenges. As the demand for efficient emergency services continues to grow, AI-powered solutions like SmartAssist may play a crucial role in ensuring public safety and streamlining emergency response systems.
