The Current State of AI
Generative AI, despite its revolutionary potential, is reminiscent of the early days of dial-up internet. The user experience of interacting with AI chatbots like ChatGPT bears a striking resemblance to connecting to a BBS in the pre-World Wide Web era. Both involve typing into an empty window and receiving text responses, often with noticeable delays.
Key Parallels Between AI and Dial-Up:
- Limited integration: AI features are often isolated from other app functions, similar to how dial-up internet was separate from other PC activities.
- Metered access: Many AI services have usage limits or additional costs, reminiscent of paying for internet access by the hour.
- Slow adoption: Only 18% of people use ChatGPT weekly, indicating it’s not yet an essential tool for most.
- Hardware limitations: Only 3% of PCs sold this year will be “AI PCs,” limiting widespread adoption.
The Road to Ubiquity
The journey from dial-up to broadband took years, with broadband reaching 51% of U.S. households only by 2007. Similarly, AI’s path to ubiquity will likely be gradual. It will take time for AI to become fully integrated into our devices and software, and for the technology to mature to a point where it’s as seamless and indispensable as high-speed internet is today. This transition period suggests that the full potential of AI may not be realized for several years to come.
